Late evening, early morning, middle of the day. It really doesn't matter much to the resident orchestra at my place. We are often treated to an ensemble of sound. Baby girl dances and claps. Second son finds every available instrument in the house and fires them up simultaneously. Our eldest proudly displays his musical talents on his newly acquired violin. I think the big hand had just moved past six o'clock this morning when their enthusiasm was unleashed. Prying open my weary eyes after a night of constant breastfeeding, I fained meek approval and pretended to enjoy the ruckus that had brought this deliciously rainy Sunday morning to an abrupt end. God, love 'em. Full of ambition, fun and playfulness. Where does all that energy come from? I painfully recalled a time when an old music teacher ridiculed my newly found flute playing talents in front of other students. Full of pride I played the few screechy notes I had learned the previous week. I had practiced to my hearts content day and night and so wanted to show him what I had learnt. Feeling belittled and humiliated I shrunk back into my seat and never had the same confidence with playing again. Little did he realise the damage a passing comment had made. So I rolled over, smiled brightly at my children and allowed the crazy tunes to surround me. I clapped and cheered and rejoiced in their confidence and unbridled delight. How fleeting such innocence is. So precious and fragile. Yes, it's loud and chaotic, consuming of the silence a Sunday morning beckons. But, all in all, I wouldn't have it any other way. Enjoy the wild times.
