Natural Solutions For Bites & Stings
Rachael Gleeson
PREVENTION
Taking a zinc supplement will deter mosquito’s from biting in the first place. Dosage depends on age and weight so always check with a qualified practitioner or at least read the manufacturers instructions on the label.
Another mosquito bite preventative is Vitamin B6. When taking a specific B vitamin on its own, a B complex should be taken with it. Dosage depends on age and weight so always check with a qualified practitioner or at least read the manufacturers instructions on the label.
Citronella oil is a well-known mosquito deterrent. Citronella candles are available or you can purchase the oil and dab it on cotton balls, placing them strategically throughout your home.
Lavender is another oil that mosquitos dislike. You can add a few drops to a burner or try the insect repellent recipe under essential oils.
ESSENTIAL OILS
Natural Insect Repellent
A natural insect repellent can be made as an alternative to conventional sprays and lotions (if you read the label carefully of most commercial brands you will see they are not recommended for children). Add 4-6 drops of lavender oil to 1 tablespoon of almond oil and mix well. Apply to the neck, arms and legs, avoiding the eye area. Massage in well.
HERBAL TREATMENT
Chickweed Oil
Chickweed can be used for many irritated skin conditions, including bites/stings because of its astringent, comforting qualities. Place 1 cup of dried chickweed leaves together with 2 cups of sweet almond oil in a non-metallic saucepan (improvise with a heat proof bowl over a saucepan filled half way with water if you do not have a non-metallic one). Simmer over a low heat for 3 hours. Using rubber gloves or some sort of heat protection, strain the mixture in a muslin or cheesecloth bag, squeezing out any excess liquid. Let the oil cool and transfer it into a dark container.
OLD FASHIONED REMEDIES
Believe it or not, honey is great for bee stings. Once you have removed the sting, dab honey over the affected area.
A slice of onion applied to a mosquito or bull ant bite will alleviate the sting and itching.
Most types of stings can be relieved with a dab of damp salt. Other tricks include a baking soda and water paste smeared on the area or replace baking soda with Epsom salts if you have none on hand. Particularly good for wasp stings is a paste made from 1 tablespoon of baking soda with sufficient water to make a paste consistency. Remove the sting and apply to the affected area.
