What on earth does 'swaddle a baby' mean?

Swaddling is the ancient art of snugly wrapping your baby to help him or her feel safe and secure (just like being back in the womb). It can keep them from being disturbed by his own startle reflex (those alarming jerks of the body are known as hypnagogic startles and are perfectly normal). Swaddling can also help settle your baby down when he or she is overstimulated. It's a great cue to use to let baby know 'now it's time for sleep, not play :)'

It's a good idea to check your baby isn't hungry or wet before you start and make sure you don't cover any part of their face or head as they may overheat. If your baby is swaddled, he or she won't usually need another blanket on top - unless it's winter.

How do I swaddle my baby?

• Place a large muslin wrap on a flat surface (inside the cot or on a bed is perfect) and fold down the top right corner about 15cm.

• Place your baby on his back with his head on the fold (so the fold line runs across the top of the shoulders)

• Pull the corner near your baby's left hand across his body, and tuck the leading edge under his right arm and around under his back.

• Pull the bottom corner up under your baby's chin.

• Bring the right-hand corner over and tuck it under his back on the left side. Some babies prefer to have their arms free, so you may like to swaddle your baby under the arms so he has access to his hands and fingers.
