    Forums News - May 2011

What a month we've had, what a lovely intertwining building month. We're baring all & embracing transparency. We're learning & sharing & being real with ourselves & others about our journey as mothers & as women. Why is it though that being gentle with our selves can be so difficult? I think as parents we are each our own biggest critic. If only we could consistently offer our selves the same tender & empathetic nature we offer our young ones.

Having said that I do wonder how natural it is that we regularly lean toward being harsh on ourselves? Could it be a primal defence against complacency? Oh parenting really is an expedition at times.

So we've been having some great conversations as we move toward this more real & transparent place...

We've been talking a lot in the Gentle Guidance forum, about dealing with challenging kids, understanding boundaries & developmental stages. We've been sharing our struggles with consistency, support & conditioning whilst also figuring out where we fit in this, not just as the parents but as children who were once parented in ways that many of us are now try to avoid repeating.

Books are amazing & there are some good ones out there [we've just finished reading 'Children are People too' by Louise Porter in our Book Club] but sooner or later the rubber meets the road & we actually have to try to manifest this desired parenting of ours, usually in the middle of the supermarket with a couple of fighting &/ or screaming kids & a smashed jar of pasta sauce...more expeditioning.

We have just launched a Kids Kraft section (in the DIY forum) we will be filling that with inspiration & practical ideas for crafting with our children. Creativity is such an important part of a child's world & the tactile & messy aspects of craft are often the basis for their first contact with independent learning in a structured sense.

The Trading Room that was re-launched last month & has some requests in there from people looking for specific items...birthing pools, kids clothes, books...I'm also hoping that we can all start to move some of our once loved/ no longer needed items through the trading room for other people to get use out of & to help minimise our contributions to landfill. The trading Room is a great place to give away or sell items that are of no use to you but that still have plenty of wear in them. Blessing others & caring for the environment, win win.

Also make sure you go & meet your 'forum leaders' in the new forum of the same name. Read about who these women are & understand a bit more about why they volunteer in our village.

Speaking of beautiful women, this month we will start to look at a subject that is paramount to most of us. Body image & more specifically, body image post baby. We will be looking at advertising & the media, society, relationships & legacies...& us...of course. I hope you can all tune in for these threads & discussions & share with us or just read along, which ever you feel comfortable with.

Providing the opportunity & the support to discuss the truth of our lives, our hopes & our reality is exactly what this community is about. Our goal here is not only to help support each other in our endeavour to raise our children in connected, gentle & respectful ways but to also offer a place for us to each be free in our parenting journey.

Look forward to seeing you all on the boards

    Peace

    Treating Whooping Cough

Whooping cough (Pertussis) is a highly contagious infection of the respiratory tract, caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Young infants less than 6 months of age are at the greatest risk. Complications of whooping cough include pneumonia, seizures and lack of oxygen to the brain, which can result in death.

The disease is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or via direct contact with fluid from the nose or throat. Symptoms generally occur between 7 to 20 days after infection with an irritating cough which gradually develops into repeated bouts of coughing followed by a 'whoop' sound when inhaling. The 'whoop' is particularly evident in younger children, but may not always present in young infants, older children and adults. These symptoms can last between 1-3 months or longer.

Naturopaths can treat whooping cough successfully by increasing the immune system function, decreasing the coughing spasms, and providing adjunct therapies to current conventional medicines.

Remedies that may help provide relief from a cough

Inhalation: Using a steam inhalation of essential oils may be a convenient and effective way to soothe a cough.

Using a herbal cough syrup may help to provide relief from an irritating cough by breaking down mucus, acting as an expectorant and relieving spasmodic coughing.

Herbal throat lozenges and gargles may help to soothe an inflamed and irritated throat which can lead to painful fits of coughing.

Fluids, such as herbal teas, can help to thin out mucus, making it easier to expel.

Acupuncture and other manual therapies can provide symptomatic relief.

Tea recipe: To make a great hot drink when you have a cough, add fresh ginger slices, manuka honey and fresh lemon juice to a mug of hot water. Ginger is warming and helps to break up mucus.

    Forum News July 2011

The community's had another busy month, more long term readers joining us as active members & lots of new users finding us through the rejuvenation of our facebook page

We've had 6 new births recently, 2 mums were labouring over mothers day which was very exciting.

Congratulations to all the new mums & welcome earth side babies, its been so lovely following along your pregnancy journeys & now hearing of your births & 'meeting' your little ones too. We've birthed another new forum called Early Daze specifically for newborn information, support, general chat & to better help accommodated our ever growing village.

The Perth, Sydney & Brisbane Get Togethers all now have dates & a Melbourne Get Together is gathering momentum. Our Homebirth Forum is powering along, as more & more women join the village looking for homebirthing support & information in a laid back yet empowered community. Its nice to see student Midwives & Doulas come in to the Birth Support (Midwives/ Doulas/ Students) section looking for 'follow throughs' to offer free birthing support to. It feels 'right' to be able to help Midwife & Doula students to complete their training & gain further experience. The simple act of taking on a student means we are helping, impacting & continuing the homebirth experience for many generations of women to come, we are not just receiving from Midwives & Doulas we are giving back to them also.

The Kids Creative Corner is growing nicely & is a wonderful place to come for creative ideas...feel free to share your own creative ideas & escapades as well. Our New Teens forum (Talking Teens Learning & Beyond) was launched in May & will grow steadily to help better support parents stay connected as our children grow.

The Special Needs & Disabilities Forum is also under way to better assist our community & to also support the growing number of children with ADD & ADHD whose parents are looking for alternative treatments & therapies. As you can see the Month of May was all about growth. Supply & Demand some may say : )

This month (June) we're hoping to do a fair bit on connecting our community & will have another PM day, we're also going to look at a few big topics like Women & Body Image & also Mummy Guilt. What an amazing journey to take together, sharing natural parenting information & supporting each other as we each move toward more connected, gentle & natural parenting.
