In western society the dominance of the medical system is robbing women of their power and choice in birth. The vast majority of women give birth in a hospital setting, surrounded by strangers. They experience considerable intervention into the birth process leaving many dissatisfied with their birthing experience. Despite government policy a very small number of women in this country are able to access midwifery led care. In our Birth Reform section you can read about the Maternity Coalition’s role in advocating for women’s access to appropriate models of maternity care. There is also information on the Caesarean Awareness Network of Australia and a number of articles focusing on social policy and the political aspects of maternity care.
